Nutritionist’s Note

I recommend this bowl for clients seeking to repair their gut microbiome while keeping blood sugar stable. The live cultures in kefir, fibre from oats and flaxseed, and antioxidant berries work synergistically to support digestion and satiety. It’s ideal for early-morning energy before a busy day or after a light workout.

Ingredients

  • 200 g plain kefir (full-fat)
  • 60 g rolled oats (gluten-free if preferred)
  • 30 g mixed berries, fresh or frozen
  • 10 g chia seeds
  • 10 g ground flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) raw honey
  • 50 g low-fat Greek yoghurt (optional)
  • 100 ml unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) lemon juice
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 5 g toasted almond slivers
  • 2 tbsp (30 g) pomegranate seeds (optional garnish)

Method

  1. In a medium bowl whisk together the kefir and almond milk until smooth, creating a pourable base that will coat the oats evenly.
  2. Stir in the rolled oats, chia seeds, ground flaxseed and a pinch of sea salt; let the mixture rest for 3 minutes so the oats begin to soften and absorb liquid.
  3. While the base rests, rinse the mixed berries and pat them dry; if using frozen berries, allow them to thaw slightly so they stay plump.
  4. Fold the berries, lemon juice and honey into the oat-kefir mixture, distributing the natural sweetness and a hint of acidity throughout.
  5. Divide the mixture between two serving bowls and scatter toasted almond slivers and pomegranate seeds on top for crunch and colour.
  6. If you like extra creaminess, dollop the Greek yoghurt over each bowl just before serving and give a gentle swirl.
  7. Serve immediately to enjoy the live probiotic cultures; any leftovers can be refrigerated and eaten cold within 12 hours.

Storage

Transfer any leftovers to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 24 hours; the oats will continue to absorb liquid, so stir in a splash of almond milk before eating. Do not freeze, as the kefir texture changes when thawed.

Tips

  • For extra protein, add a tablespoon of hemp seeds or a scoop of plant-based protein powder.
  • If you need a lower-sugar option, replace honey with a drizzle of stevia-based liquid sweetener.
  • To boost prebiotic fibre, stir in a teaspoon of inulin powder before serving.
