Steps to Distance Calculator

Step counts are useful, but distance can feel more meaningful — it is easier to picture “3.2 miles” than “7,500 steps.” This calculator converts your daily step count into an estimated distance in miles and kilometres, using your height to estimate your average stride length.

How This Is Calculated

This calculator first estimates your average stride length from your height, using the formula stride (metres) = height (cm) × 0.414 ÷ 100, a widely-used approximation of the relationship between height and stride length. It then multiplies your step count by your estimated stride length to get a distance in kilometres, and converts this to miles using the standard conversion factor of 1km = 0.621371 miles. Because everyone’s natural stride varies slightly, this is a good general estimate rather than an exact GPS-measured distance.

Making Your Steps Count

  • Consistency matters more than hitting a single perfect number every day.
  • Short, regular walks (for example, after meals) can be just as valuable as one long walk.
  • Adding a few minutes of brisk walking, where you can hold a conversation but feel slightly out of breath, adds extra benefit without much extra time.
  • Pairing regular walking with a balanced, nutrient-rich diet supports weight management, energy and overall health more effectively than either alone.

Walking is a simple, sustainable way to support activity levels during any life stage, including menopause, when maintaining muscle mass and managing weight can become more challenging. My Menopause Nutrition page covers how diet and activity work together during this stage of life.
